The Preceptor Training Program, LLC has developed entirely evidence-based preceptor training programs for those in clinical & non-clinical settings grounded in ongoing peer review and assessment of over 800 academic and professional publications spanning more than 40 years of research within the fields of preceptoring and nursing, pharmacy, medicine, advanced practice (APRNs & PAs), leadership, and education. Appropriately and well-trained clinical preceptors markedly improve key aspects of practice like safety and quality, as well as positively impacting retention, satisfaction, collaboration, institutional perception, resource utilization, and organizational wayfinding & navigation. Effective teaching and learning experiences guard against and significantly reduce turnover, dissatisfaction, disappointment, and financial loss.
Our comprehensive program consists of 25 modules (on average, 50+ minutes each), delivered by subject matter experts and leaders in preceptoring across disciplines. They are designed to be taken in sequence. Modules are easily accessible online and can be done at the learner’s convenience and pace.
The vast majority of healthcare organizations and academic institutions currently provide little to no training for their clinical preceptors. For those that do offer training, it is often limited to a few hours, once or twice annually, and focused on logistics, paperwork, checklists, and timelines rather than the fundamental purpose of preceptoring: effectively imparting knowledge, understanding, adaptability, and critical thinking skills. Very few organizations orient their preceptors or teach them the fundamental purpose and skills of preceptoring and how to effectively manage preceptorships. The Preceptor Training Program was thoughtfully designed and developed as a solution to this gap in training for new and experienced preceptors.
The Preceptor Training Program offers eight (8) series for preceptors in different professional roles:
- Registered Nurses (RNs)
- Pharmacists (PharmDs)
- Advanced Practice Providers (APPs: APRNs & PAs)
- Physicians (MDs/DOs)
- Physical/Occupational Therapists (PTs/OTs)
- Paramedics & Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
- Administrators
- Academics
The first of these series (for advanced practice providers) began development in 2018 and will formally launch and be available in mid-2024. Others will become available shortly after.
Additionally, Preceptor Training & Certification has developed a pathway to becoming board certified as a preceptor. Those interested in certification can apply after they have successfully completed 25 credit/contact hours (CE/CME) in courses directly related to preceptoring and successfully pass the standardized, multiple choice, proctored certification exam. Status as a Certified Preceptor (CP) is valid for a three-year period.
